WORK 8th feb

Today in class we were looking at complaints and restraints in media, as the basis of media is to suit the audience any complaints must be addressed to ensure a sustainable audience. If there are many faults in a program people wont will complain, and if the show continues to make mistakes people will stop watching. When there are a lot of complaints against a small amount of the production ( take language as an example) the company who air the show may decide to put the show on after the watershed, as just discarding a show costs money as the company buy the program before they air it. If massive offense is caused ( shown by a large amount of complaints sent in) then they may cancel the program.

People often make complaints about content that is for a more mature audience before the watershed, so there are restraints placed on programs. Restraints on language, violence, alcohol, narcotics and certain themes, these restraints are important because children and young teens may be influenced by what they see on TV as well as the fact that some themes are just to mature to go into in detail for a certain age group ( for example in news round [a childrens news program] they have done subjects on cannabis, but they have been restrained from talking about how the drug is used or what type of people use the drug, they are only allowed to talk about some of the effects, use certain statistics and use interviews with people who have used the drug, even the bits they have put into the report that follow those rules can still be restrained to make the content more suitable for young children ).

There are some programs that are made to offend people or inform people , they are made to take people out of there comfort zone , but they do that to ether to make fun of or point out serious flaws in society. Most of the programs that are maid to offend or inform come with a warning before them which in a way bypass the normal restraints, it also means they can void most complaints with a response like 'we had warned you before hand'. These programs attract a bigger audience as people will watch a program just to see how offensive the program is, and it also attracts the people who want to know about the subject.
